Below are the leaks and confirmations we know about the game so far:

Tekken 8 trailers

The announcement of Tekken 8 took place on September 13, 2022, during PlayStation’s State of Play. A teaser trailer was initially showcased at the Tekken 7 tournament during EVO 2022, followed by the official announcement in Sony’s State of Play presentation.

Tekken 8 stories

Set half a year after Tekken 7, the new storyline delves into the tumultuous relationship between Jin Kazama and his father, Kazuya Mishima. As Jin aims to eliminate Kazuya to end their lineage’s chaos, Kazuya continues wreaking havoc in the world.

Although Jin has his family in previous installments, this time, he will face a significant internal struggle with the Devil Gene, which threatens to consume his humanity and transform him into Devil Jin during battles.

Tekken 8 gameplay

Maintaining the high-speed fighting gameplay of Tekken 7, Tekken 8 incorporates most of the previous mechanics and controls while introducing some new elements, such as:

Focus on “Unbridled Aggression”

The Rage system, first introduced in Tekken 6, returns in Tekken 8, granting players enhanced attacks when their health drops below a specific threshold.

Like Mortal Kombat 11’s Critical Strike or Street Fighter IV’s Super Combo, Rage Arts will still be present and can be activated using a single button or a combination of down, forward, and two buttons. However, Rage Drives, employed for longer combos in Rage mode, have been removed for balancing purposes to avoid over-complication.

A new Heat system

The Heat system, previously discussed by Harada at an event, receives an in-depth explanation. It was described as a “hugely advantageous phase for the attacker.”

Players in Tekken 8 can activate Heat Burst by pressing a shoulder button or using various Heat Engager attacks (typically around five per character). Upon activation, the player is engulfed in blue flames for 10 seconds, which can be extended through continuous attacking.

The Heat system also incorporates a currency that players must acquire and strategically utilize:

  • Heat Smash consumes all Heat energy and pushes the opponent away.
  • Heat Dash uses energy to cancel an attack, leaving the attacker in a favorable state to maintain pressure.
  • Heat Bursts generate one energy point.
  • Heat Engagers provide two energy points.

Players can tailor their gameplay style based on how they gain and expend Heat energy. The Heat system also functions differently across characters. This adds an extra layer of diversity and strategy to the gameplay.

Health Recovery System

Tekken 8 reintroduces the health recovery system from Tekken Card Tournament. Although players can recover a small amount of health from aerial combos or blocking powerful moves, the game lacks a tagging feature.

Instead, players can regain this health by attacking opponents, regardless of whether their attacks are defended or land successfully. This decision emphasizes the central focus on aggression in the game.

Control Options

Harada also discussed Tekken 8’s new control system. Similar to Street Fighter 6, the game offers two control options: Arcade Style and Special Style. Arcade Style remains consistent with traditional Tekken gameplay, while Special Style integrated Easy Combo and support features from Tekken 7.

Single buttons can execute specific moves, simplifying the experience for beginners. These moves change based on whether the player is in Heat or Rage mode.

Unlike Street Fighter 6, which restricts its user-friendly control setup, Special Style can be used in any mode, whether online or offline.

Notably, some characters have been redesigned from their previous appearances, such as Jun, who has been reimagined by the character designer from Bayonetta. However, the strongest character for increasing Tekken’s rank remains to be seen.

Improved graphics with Unreal Engine 5

One standout feature of Tekken 8 is its impressive graphics, benefiting from a six-year technological gap since the previous title. Tekken 8 is the first fighting game developed using Unreal Engine 5, with all characters built from scratch.

The game’s animations are incredibly smooth and fluid, seamlessly transitioning between various moves, actions, and attacks. The attention to detail in character models, environments, and battle effects is remarkable.

Hyper-realistic features such as sweat, pores, and protruding veins on the boxer elevate the next-gen rendering experience. Even the dust particles that emerge when characters block attacks are impressively detailed – a feature that may have gone unnoticed in previous iterations.

So, that’s what we know about what’s Tekken 8 leaked. Although there is no official release date, this game excites fans. With new mechanics, a reworked character system, and improved graphics, this latest installment in the fighting game series promises plenty of surprises. Stay tuned for the beta or, better yet, its official release in 2023!
