When joining the game, you will play the main character, who has been implanted with the seed of destruction called Stellaron. Destruction, a god-like being, is responsible for this. He wants to borrow the Stellaron seed to wipe out human civilization.

In Honkai Star Rail, you will control a party of up to four characters while exploring an open world and engaging in strategic turn-based combat encounters in space.
The game’s combat system focuses on team building, where you must choose the best combinations of up to four players per team based on their attacks, assists, and Elemental types. If you want more options for your team, you can join the game’s gacha system.
During battles in Honkai Star Rail, the order of attacks is displayed in the upper left corner, and it’s essential to take note of your opponent’s weaknesses (for example, their weakness to Ice damage is indicated by a small frost icon below their name).
Each character has three attack types: basic attacks, skills, and ultimates. Skills cost Skill Points, which are restored by basic attacks, requiring a balance between these two throughout the fight. Ultimates can be used anytime without costing any Skill points, but they take time to charge up.

In the game, characters are not classified based on their weapons. Instead, they belong to a specific Element and Path. There are a total of 7 Paths and 6 Elements.

The absence of PvP mode means players are not pressured to spend money to gain or maintain a competitive advantage, rank high on leaderboards, or play alongside paying players.
Despite some fans’ desire to see PvP mode added to HoYoverse games, there is no reliable information about the multiplayer mode in Honkai: Star Rail, which focuses solely on the story. However, the game will likely follow the same approach as other HoYoverse games, with options for cooperative play with two to four players in limited settings and support for visiting friends.
